CHAPTER THIRTEEN

"SHOULD HAVE LISTENED. Should have listened to me," Agatha muttered.

Fearing what might occur if she tried to pass through him, Timmy stepped away from the window as his wild-eyed grandmother crossed the room in three strides, gave a frantic look outside, and tugged the curtains closed. Darkness swept into the room and lingered, retaining the correct properties of shunned light only for a moment before everything changed again. The walls began to waver and Agatha's retreating form was torn asunder and claimed by the shadows like a flock of birds exploding from their roosts. In the chair, a pale form began to surface, a moon-white face emerging from the dark. Ragged breathing filled the air.

"Did you see?" the withered Agatha asked.

He nodded. It felt like moving his head through quicksand.

"Then go back into life knowing."

"Is that supposed to help?" He hadn't meant it as a challenge but as his words burrowed through the air toward her, he realized that's how they had sounded.

"Nothing helps," she thrummed, the blue sparks of her eyes boring through him. "Not here. Not out there. It all ends the same. But someone has already torn doorways into your world. Doorways where there shouldn't be any. Renegades. And a war will come. People like you, of which there are many, can sense those doors. Do what you can while you can. Soon, it won't matter."

He dared move closer, reached out a hand to touch her, even as every muscle in his body protested. He needed to see if they had bodies in here, just as he seemed to have abandoned his and become a ghost in their domain.

"I don't understand."

"You will."

His fingers brushed skin that sank beneath his touch. He recoiled and light flooded the room. The chair was empty but for a scattering of dust, a mangled whisper caught between worlds drifting away from him.

After a moment spared to regain his breath, he realized he was not alone and spun around, startling his grandmother, Agatha, the real Agatha, as she was outside of other realms and visions. She was standing at the window, daylight making a silhouette of her frail body. "My God," she said. "Timmy, are you all right? What happened?"

The Curtain had fallen back and left him standing in 'life'—as the Agatha-thing had called it with marked derision. He considered celebrating his return until he realized he still had more questions than answers, and now a terrifying reality to face.

"Timmy?" She came to him, concerned.

"Stay away from me."

"What?"

"I know."

"You know what?"

"About you. About Lucy."

She smiled crookedly. "Lucy? Lucy who?"

"The woman you murdered years ago. You stabbed her in the face with a pen."

She jerked away from him as if he'd caught fire. "Timmy, you...you were in some kind of a daze...just standing there. Exhaustion will—"

He cut her off. "I saw it."

"Well then you've been imagining things." She flapped her hands. "For God's sake, listen to yourself."

He felt sick, as if everything inside him was going to come bursting out in a black torrent.
